Selective treatment by sensing the cancer microenvironment

The research team led by Professor Eun-Jung Jin (CEO of Organelle Therapeutics Inc) has developed a next-generation Photothermal Therapy (PTT) strategy capable of precisely sensing the colorectal cancer tumor microenvironment to selectively eliminate cancer cells.

This research achievement has been confirmed for publication in the globally renowned journal Chemical Engineering Journal (JCR Top 3.2%, Impact Factor: 13.3), gaining international recognition for its academic excellence and technical potential.

The research team focused on the abnormally elevated levels of glutathione (GSH) in colorectal cancer tissues and developed an injectable conductive hydrogel that selectively releases therapeutic agents and undergoes gelation only in response to the tumor microenvironment (TME). Furthermore, animal model studies confirmed that it significantly suppresses tumor growth while minimizing damage to normal tissues. Molecular biological analyses also revealed a significant reduction in the expression of β-catenin and GPX7, which are key factors in colorectal cancer development.

Meanwhile, the 'tumor microenvironment-responsive hydrogel' technology developed by the research team is a universal platform applicable not only to colorectal cancer but also to the treatment of various solid tumors. It is expected to be utilized as a core original technology for future precision anti-cancer drugs and next-generation cancer treatment methods.
